Endorsing the Lord’s Candidate

…the priesthood is needed on the earth so we can understand the will of the Lord and carry out His purposes. God reveals His will to His authorized priesthood representative on the earth, the prophet. The prophet, who is President of the Church, serves as the spokesman for God to all members of the Church and all people on the earth. (Gospel principles, 2009 edition, p69)

And behold it is written also, that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy; But behold I say unto you, love your , bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father who is in heaven; for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good. (3 Nephi 12:43-45)

Love Your Enemies

Many has heard the following teaching of our Savior, but too few have taken it seriously.

¶Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.(Matt 5:43-45)

On this passage of Holy Scripture, Managing editor of LDS Liberty, Shilo Logan, comments.

The Reproach of Men

Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart I have written my law, fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. (2 Ne. 8:7). This part of the Book of Second Nephi quotes from the Book of Isaiah? (in Chapter 51) so in both the old world and the new, the Lord admonished His people not to fear the reproach or criticism of the people around them.

Jethro’s Advice

And Moses’ father in law [Jethro] said unto him … (Exodus 18: 17)    …    Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:(Exodus 18: 21)    …    So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.(Exodus 18: 24)

The work load of leading Israel after the departure from Egypt was too great for Moses to bear alone. As Jethro advised, Moses delegated much of the responsibility to others. For our purposes here, the most important detail of the story is the list of qualities that Jethro said the leaders should have to whom Moses delegated authority and responsibility.

Upside Down

 And wo unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord! And their works are in the dark; and they say: Who seeth us, and who knoweth us? And they also say: Surely, your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay. But behold, I will show unto them, saith the Lord of Hosts, that I know all their works. For shall the work say of him that made it, he made me not? Or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, he had no understanding?( 2 Nephi 27:27)
