Love Your Enemies

on November 9, 2012

Many has heard the following teaching of our Savior, but too few have taken it seriously.

¶Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.(Matt 5:43-45)

On this passage of Holy Scripture, Managing editor of LDS Liberty, Shilo Logan, comments.

In short, the final stage of a testimony is a spiritual and physical realization concerning the true nature of what it means to follow Christ’s command to “love your enemies” (Matt 5:44), for such a command is not merely a passive feeling but a daily and active endeavor towards those who we considered our “enemy”. Indeed, it is in the final stage of testimony that we realize through living the Christ’s command to love our enemies a monumental and eternal truth: In reality, we have no enemies! Discussions of public policy would transform fundamentally for the better if more citizens applied this wonderful gospel principle. Civility in discussions among citizens would be easier to achieve if we had this gospel perspective and the temptation to push for unjust laws greatly reduced.
