Cicero Same Protecting Power

on November 1, 2012

As one and the same Nature holds together and supports the universe, all of whose parts are in harmony with one another, so men are united in Nature; but by reason of their depravity they quarrel, not realizing that they are of one blood and subject to one and the same protecting power. If this fact were understood, surely man would live the life of the gods! (Marcus Tullius Cicero, quoted in W. Cleon Skousen, The Five Thousand Year Leap, p 46)

Cicero confirms the brotherhood of man when he says that men are “…of one blood and subject to the same protecting power…” and when he says that men are “…united in Nature….”

On the other hand, being a mortal man subject to weakness of the fresh, Cicero was likely more frustrated with the quarreling of his fellow citizens than God was. When a person is so set in evil that he cannot repent, others label him depraved. Depravity is another word for what the Book of Mormon calls “ripened in iniquity.” In book of Mormon stories, when a people become depraved or ripened, their destruction soon occurs. Most people who quarrel can still repent so it is overly pessimistic to call them depraved.
