Warnings to Rich and Poor

on September 16, 2012

Politicians talk about the fairness, or lack thereof of, of the distribution of wealth. They also offer their so called solutions to the economic concerns of the citizens, but we should all remind ourselves of our Lord’s point of view.

Wo unto you rich men, that will not give your substance to the poor, for your riches will canker your souls; and this shall be your lamentation in the day of visitation, and of judgment, and of indignation: The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and my soul is not saved!
Wo unto you poor men, whose hearts are not broken, whose spirits are not contrite, and whose bellies are not satisfied, and whose hands are not stayed from laying hold upon other men’s goods, whose eyes are full of greediness, and who will not labor with your own hands! (Doctrine and Covenants 56: 16-17)

The best response to these warnings from heaven is to repent of our own sins. It will not be helpful to ignore these warnings or to point fingers at other people. Those who are relatively well off cannot please God by complaining that the poor are foolish, lazy, or irresponsible. Conversely, those who are relatively deprived can please God by complaining that the rich are selfish. Let us each determined which are his own sins and repent thereof.
