The Source of All That is Good

on September 13, 2012

God is the source of all that is good. This is a major theme of the Book of Mormon and a major theme of the People’s Party. Among the Nephites, there was a line of prophet-historians that descended from Jacob the younger brother of Nephi. Here are some of the words of the last prophet-historian in that line.

23 Behold, I, Amaleki, was born in the days of Mosiah; and I have lived to see his death; and Benjamin, his son, reigneth in his stead.

25 And it came to pass that I began to be old; and, having no seed, and knowing king Benjamin to be a just man before the Lord, wherefore, I shall deliver up these plates unto him, exhorting all men to come unto God, the Holy One of Israel, and believe in prophesying, and in revelations, and in the ministering of angels, and in the gift of speaking with tongues, and in the gift of interpreting languages, and in all things which are good; for there is nothing which is good save it comes from the Lord: and that which is evil cometh from the devil. (Omni 1:23, 25)

God is the source of all that is good. We know this is a major theme because Book of Mormon repeates it so many times. The Lord called the prophet Ether to preach to the Jaredites. As a prophet, Ether had the authority to speak the following words of the Lord.

And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me [the Lord]; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not believe my words will not believe me—that I am …. For behold, …I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world. (Ether 4:12)

In a previous post, we quoted the following passages but repeate them here to emphasis that the Book of Mormon makes multiple assertions that God is the source of all that is good. Alma the Younger writes “For I say unto you that whatsoever is good cometh from God, and whatsoever is evil cometh from the devil.”(Alma 5:40) Moroni, the last prophet historian of the Nephites includes some final remarks in the Book of Mormon. He reiterates that God is the source of all that is good.

Wherefore, all things which are good cometh of God; and that which is evil cometh of the devil; for the devil is an enemy unto God, and fighteth against him continually, and inviteth and enticeth to sin, and to do that which is evil continually. (Moroni 7:12)

So the Utah People’s Party asks each Utahn this question. If you believe that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, how can you also believe that good government is government without God?
